COALA is located at the V. Buzzi Children's Hospital in Milan, within the Unit of Pediatric Neurology, directed by Prof. Pierangelo Veggiotti, which is part of the Department of Pediatrics, directed by Prof. Gianvincenzo Zuccotti. COALA, coordinated by Prof. Davide Tonduti, is a Center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with Inherited Disorders of the Brain White Matter (Leukodystrophies and Genetic Leukoencephalopathies). These are complex neurological diseases that are often difficult to recognize and diagnose. They are almost always characterized by a multisystemic involvement that requires the intervention of specialists in various branches of medicine. The center was founded in 2020 in response to the need for a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals dedicated to this group of rare conditions. The team operates through an integrated approach, considering all clinical and rehabilitation aspects as well as new frontiers in research. Its creation was made possible by the support of several associations, particularly "Più Unici Che Rari" (More Unique Than Rare) and "Una Vita Rara" (A Rare Life), and the coordination of "OBM - Ospedale dei Bambini di Milano Buzzi Onlus."
The center's mission is to offer comprehensive clinical assistance and specific treatments for infants, children, and adolescents living with these diseases.
The basic team serving patients consists of medical specialists in Child Neuropsychiatry, General Pediatrics, Medical Genetics, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Neuroradiology, Biologists specializing in Metabolic Diseases and Neonatal Screening, as well as a Clinical Dietitian, a Speech Therapist, two Child Neuro-Psychomotor Therapists, and a Developmental Neuropsychologist.
